Exhaust System
You should check your exhaust system regularly to keep your car running smoothly and safely, and to avoid expensive repairs:
- Toxic fumes: A faulty exhaust system can release toxic gases, including carbon monoxide, which can be dangerous to your health and the health of others. These gases can be odorless and invisible, making them difficult to detect.
- Poor engine performance: A faulty exhaust system can lead to decreased engine performance and fuel efficiency.
- Increased emissions: A faulty exhaust system can contribute to air pollution and potential legal ramifications.
- MOT failure: A faulty exhaust will cause an automatic MOT failure.
- Noisy ride: A neglected exhaust system can lead to a noisy ride.
Some things you can check for when inspecting your exhaust system include:
- Holes or cracks: Check for holes or cracks in your exhaust pipes, which can let carbon monoxide into the car.
- Soot and black marks: Look for streaks of soot and black marks around the connections and flanges.
- Rattling: A rattling sound coming from under the car could indicate that the exhaust pipe or catalytic converter has come loose.
- Worn hangers or rubber isolators: Inspect and replace any worn hangers or rubber isolators.
- Flex pipe: Check the flex pipe, as it’s a common area where there’s failure.
- Blockage: Perform an engine vacuum or back pressure test to check for blockage in the system.
